Live Oak resident Richard Crowe was recognized by Haven Veteran Volunteers recently. Crowe served in the United States (U.S.) Army for two years and then went on to serve in the U.S. Navy for two years as well. “I was drafted into the Army during Vietnam and was sent to Fort Benning, Georgia for infantry training,” said Crowe, who is originally from Live Oak. “From there I was sent around to different bases for various training before they finally sent us over to Germany for 18 months.”
After his two years in the U.S. Army, Crowe decided to join the U. S. Navy where he served as a gunner’s mate aboard the USS Sellers. At the conclusion of his military service, he returned home to Live Oak. “When I returned home I got a milk and ice cream route,” said Crowe. “Then I spent time in sales and went on to work at UPS for 35 and a half years before I retired.”
The Haven Pinning Ceremony for veteran patients includes a veteran pin, a thank you card signed by the staff and a certificate of appreciation from Haven, which are all presented by volunteer veterans. The presentation ends with a salute to honor the veteran’s service. Are you a veteran in the Lake City area that is interested in helping Haven honor our veteran patients? If so, please contact Haven Lake City Volunteer Coordinator Lauren Pinchouck at 386.752.9191 or visit www.havenhospice.com/volunteer to learn more.
