Last year, Haven Hospice cared for Barrett Carver, a young child battling a brain tumor. Barrett illustrated a life well-lived in his short three years, living joyfully amid his devastating diagnosis and symptoms.

In his honor this holiday season, we shine light on fulfilled end-of-life wishes that will never be forgotten by patients and their loved ones. For some, it was one more day at the salon, one last family photography session, or one final salute from a fellow veteran. For Barrett, it was finding joy in his first-time touching snow, his third birthday party and snuggles from a pet volunteer at one of Haven’s hospice comfort care centers.

“Even in the hardest circumstances, there can still be joy,” said Amber Reddish, Barrett’s mother. “Barrett’s life was short, but it was filled with love, laughter, and resilience. He never let his illness define him. And I hope people understand that hospice isn’t just about dying. It’s about living—making the most of the time you have. Haven gave us comfort, dignity, and moments of joy. Even in heartbreak. I hate that pediatric hospice has to exist, but I’m so thankful it does. It gave us the chance to make Barrett’s time as beautiful and loving as it could be.”

In hospice care we believe in quality of life and living one’s life well, especially at the end. At Haven Hospice, we’ve had the privilege and honor of helping thousands of our friends and neighbors live life well in our decades of service to North Florida. Compassionate care is provided every day across 18 North Florida counties by Haven’s nurses, nurses’ aides, social workers, chaplains, physicians, and volunteers, who help provide comfort and dignity, final memories, closure, and more. So many special moments are made possible thanks to the continuing generous support of the communities we’ve been serving for more than 45 years.

Please consider writing a personal inscription on the enclosed paper candle tag and return it to Haven to hang on a holiday tree in honor or memory of your loved one or a hospice caregiver.
